Are you or someone you know interested in being on the Board of the South Sound Blues Association? Prior nonprofit board experience is a plus but is not required. Find out what’s involved and how your life and work experience may contribute to keeping the Blues alive (and have fun doing it!).

Our Mission

The South Sound Blues Association is committed to preserving and promoting blues music and the blues community; supporting blues education; and promoting the South Sound area blues scene and its blues musicians. We are dedicated to preserving the blues as an American art form on behalf of its performers and fans through education, community and performances.

What are some things SSBA does to fulfill its mission?

  • We are an active member of the Blues Foundation in Memphis, TN.
  • We work with other blues societies and help with the International Blues Competition.
  • We share information with our blues community and promote live blues performances.
  • Sponsor local South Sound blues events, music festivals and promote our member bands
  • Sponsor musicians through educational organizations
  • We create visibility at festivals all over WA state with the SSBA booth to grow and inform the blues community.
  • We host at least one event of our own each year.
  • We produce a high-quality and informative monthly newsletter.
  • Provide a music calendar plus interesting and educational information on our website
  • We are proactive through our social media channels, including over 2,500 Facebook followers.
  • We have monthly board meetings to reinforce our commitment to SSBA’s mission and the blues community we serve.

How many Board Members are there, what do they do?

The Board of Directors is comprised of 5 to 7 people. Board Members commit to serving for two (2) years. The term for Board Officers is for one (1) year, which includes President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.

Board Members work together to set policies, provide fiscal oversight, oversee operations, assist with fundraising, plus planning and development of association activities and how best to use our financial resources to serve our mission.

Board Members attend monthly board meetings.

Board Members typically serve on at least one committee which may include newsletter and communications, merchandise, membership, website and social media, sponsorships, fundraising, events, and special committees as needed.

What are the requirements?

Interested candidates must be members of the SSBA for 90 days prior to the elections.

Prior nonprofit board experience is a plus but not required. Interested candidates with a passion for the blues and/or contacts in the community is also preferred but not required.

Must have the ability to develop and maintain a good working relationship with a diverse group of people. SSBA is committed to equality and inclusion.

We are particularly interested in recruiting Board Members with (but not limited to) business, financial, or fundraising/development experience.

Interested candidates should send a short Letter of Intent before the application deadline expressing their desire to participate, along with some background information. All nominations are screened and will be interviewed by current Board Member/s. Self-nominations are acceptable, as are nominations by another member.
